Miscues doomed Red Rock Central Friday, as Cedar Mountain raced to a 22-0 halftime lead on its way to a 36-22 victory in the Section 2 Nine-Player championship game, played at Cottonwood.

The Falcons had two fumbles in the first half, then had two interceptions in the second half.

Meanwhile, the Cougars were able to convert three straight drives into touchdowns in the second quarter, taking command of the game.

After RRC was forced to punt on its opening possession, the Falcons appeared to catch a break. Tyler Therkilsen intercepted a pass and returned it into Cougar territory.

The Falcons then moved quickly toward the red zone, but a fumble gave the ball over to the Cougars.

Cedar Mountain then marched 89 yards in 20 plays, capped with a 2-yard touchdown run by Cooper Freitag for a 7-0 lead.

After RRC was forced to punt, the Cougars converted another drive, moving 44 yards in eight plays. Brannden Pendleton scored on a 6-yard pass from Carson Schiller. Freitag added the two-point conversion run for a 15-0 lead.

Then, on RRC’s next play from scrimmage, the Cougars forced a strip-sack on Falcon quarterback Isaac Simonson, giving Cedar Mountain the ball at the Falcon 10. Three plays later, Freitag score on a 2-yard run and added the extra-point kick for a 22-0 lead.

The Cougars expanded the lead on the first play of the second half, as Schiller hit Lane Guggisberg with a 59-yard touchdown strike, giving the Cougars a 29-0 lead.

RRC had a drive into Cougar territory late in the third quarter end with an interception. But early in the third, the Falcons were able to get on the board, scoring on a 4-yard pass from Simonson to Jayden Lang, making the score 29-6.

But the Cougars were able to put the game out of reach with an eight-play, 55-yard drive, capped with a 6-yard scoring run from Freitag.

RRC was able to tack on a pair of late touchdowns, as Carter Therkilsen scored on runs of 52 and 17 yards in the closing minutes.

Therkilsen rushed 20 times for 168 yards. Simonson completed 15-of-26 passes for 133 yards. Lang had six catches for 77 yards.
