The Watonwan County Sheriff’s Office reported that a person who had escaped from the jail earlier in the week had been apprehended, and that two suspects had been taken into custody for aiding the escape.
On. Nov. 1, officers followed up on leads and located the vehicle Leonardo Lopez Jr. had used to escape from the Watonwan County Jail. When officers stopped the vehicle, Lopez attempted to flee on foot. Deputies and St. James Police, with the assistance of the New Ulm K9 unit, tracked Lopez into a field, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
Two other occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody for aiding Lopez. In addition, one adult male was arrested on a warrant on an unrelated charge.
Lopez was transported to the Watonwan County Jail, where he awaits further charges stemming from his escape.
Watonwan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Madelia, St. James and New Ulm police departments, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force and the Minnesota State Patrol.
