Alternative school withdraws from SRO deal

With regret, the Windom City Council recently accepted a request from the Red Rock Ridge school to terminate its relationship with the Windom Police Department and the School Resource Officer program.

That program put a police officer at the school for a half hour of foot patrol each day, and had the goal of creating familiarity and trust between school students and staff and the police.

The contract was to run into 2024, and the council was taken by surprise at the request, but ultimately agreed, mainly due to legal advice, to the termination on a split vote of three to two. All of the council members expressed regret in presenting and passing the request for termination, and pledged to write a letter to the school making it clear they do not believe this is in the best interest of the school or the Windom community.

With the termination, the school agrees to pay the Windom Police Department $14,000 to fullfill what was agreed to in the pilot program and arrangements for the SRO.
