School discusses tax abatement

The city of Windom has made a request to the Windom Area School District regarding a tax abatement on certain properties within city limits.

Supt. Jamie Frank updated the school board of developments at Monday’s meeting.

The city is constructing a new electric generation building and is renovating the municipal liquor store. The city plans to issue abatement bonds to finance the projects. The school district had declined to participate in the tax abatement.

The district’s financial advisor was consulted and it was found the abatement would not impact the district’s taxes, but would allow the city to have up to 20 years to repay the bond, rather than 15 years.

No further action was taken.

More from Monday’s school board meeting appears in the Oct. 25 print and e-editions of the Citizen.
