The Windom Eagle football team held off a late rally Friday night, picking up its first victory of the season with a 28-20 win over Russell-Tyler-Ruthton at Tyler.

The win snapped a 16-game losing streak for the Eagles. Windom’s last victory came Oct. 1, 2021 against LeSueur-Henderson.

The Eagle defense turned in a stellar first half, with the offense scoring late in the second quarter and on the first drive of the third to take a 20-0 lead.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 27-yard run from Quintin Tietz.

After being held in check most of the first half, RTR’s offense mounted a drive late in the half, pushing down to the Eagle 5-yard line. But Windom’s defense tightened, holding the Knights out of the end zone.

Then, with time running out in the opening half, the Eagles marched the length of the field, capping a 93-yard drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Tietz to Karson LaCanne with five seconds left in the half. Windom led 12-0 at the break.

The Eagles opened the second half with a strong drive, scoring on a 19-yard pass from Tietz to LaCanne. The two connected for the two-point conversion for a 20-0 Eagle lead.

RTR bounced back, scoring on a 1-yard quarterback sneak and two-point conversion.

After forcing an Eagle punt, the Knights tried to mount another drive, but on a third down play, a pass was intercepted by LaCanne, who returned it 54 yards for a touchdown. Tietz hit LaCanne for the two-point conversion, giving the Eagles a 28-8 lead.

RTR put together a pair of scoring drives in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 9-yard touchdown pass and a 1-yard quarterback sneak. But after recovering an onside kick, the Eagles were able to run out the clock.

Tietz rushed 13 times for 97 yards. Stevie Meyer added 31 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Tietz completed 16-of-35 passes for 181 yards.

Tucker Renquist had three catches for 49 yards. Kevin Bleess had five catches for 48 yards.

Red Rock Central’s homecoming game was played on the road Friday night, but Cedar Mountain spoiled the Falcons’ festivities with a 28-8 decision at Morgan.

The Cougars raced to a 20-0 halftime lead and led 28-0 after their first drive of the second half.

RRC’s offense tried to counter, but bogged down after a trio of lengthy drives in the first half. RRC turned the ball over on downs on each of its final three drives of the first half and on its first drive of the second half.

The Falcons finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter on a 15-yard touchdown run from Abe Stavnes and two-point conversion pass from Isaac Simonson to Jayden Lang.
