THURSDAY FOOTBALL: Wolverines fall in overtime

MLA 00-00-00-14-00 = 14
NUC 00-06-08-00-06 = 20

Mt. Lake Area tied the game late in regulation Thursday afternoon, but New Ulm Cathedral scored in overtime and held the Wolverines out of the end zone to claim a 20-14 overtime victory at Johnson Field in New Ulm.

Cathedral held the Wolverine offense in check for the first three quarters, as MLA did not run a play in Greyhound territory until the fourth quarter.

Trailing 14-0 entering the fourth, the Wolverines scored on a 6-yard pass from Jake Evers to John Bergeman. Evan Karschnik’s two-point run cut the deficit to 14-8.

After forcing a Cathedral punt, the Wolverines closed regulation with an 83-yard, 13-play drive. Karschnik scored on a 3-yard run with 21 seconds left on the clock, tying the game at 14-14. But rather than attempting a go-ahead extra-point kick, the Wolverines tried a two-point conversion, with the run attempt stopped short, sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, Cathedral got the ball first and scored on a 1-yard sneak by quarterback Jevan Wilfahrt. The two-point attempt failed, leaving the score 20-14.

MLA was thrown for a loss on its first play, then Cathedral recorded a sack on third down and batted a pass down on fourth down, sealing the game.
