Wings United 0-2 = 2
Worthington 5-1 = 6
The Wings United girls soccer team made history in two ways Thursday evening in St. James.
The Wings played their first-ever Big South Conference varsity match, taking on Worthington. The Wings also saw the first two goals in program history scored, but opened the 2023 season with a 6-2 loss to the Trojans.
Worthington took command early in the match, scoring in the sixth minute. The Trojans then peppered the Wings net, scoring four more goals on a total of nine shot attempts in the first half to take a 5-0 lead.
Worthington stretched the lead to 6-0 early in the second half before the Wings found their offensive footing.
With 8:59 left on the clock, Tora Hemmingsen raced into the clearing and flipped a shot past the reach of the Trojan goalie for the first goal in Wings program history. The team did not score a goal in its first season of play.
Then, less than a minute later, the Wings worked the ball into the offensive zone, with Hemmingsen taking a pass from Mayra Aguilar and booting a shot past the Trojan keeper, making the score 6-2.
