Mt. Lake amateur baseball team folds mid-season

The First Nite League announced Thursday that the Mt. Lake Lakers amateur baseball team announced it was folding for the remainder of the season, effective Wednesday.

The Lakers had two scheduled games last week postponed due to a lack of available players. The team had been slated to play a home doubleheader Sunday in Mt. Lake against Fairmont and Ruthton.

The league announced that all of Mt. Lake’s scheduled games would go into the standings as forfeits, and no Mt. Lake players would be eligible to be drafted in the postseason.

Mt. Lake reportedly has committed to have enough players to participate in the scheduled July 12 Strike Out Cancer game at Island Park against the Windom Pirates.

There has not yet been any determination on whether or not Mt. Lake will try to resume play next season.

In the last couple of years, the Lakers had an agreement with the city of St. James to play scheduled Wednesday night home games in St. James. However, the team was not permitted to play games in St. James this year.
