Windom at Section 2A Meet
A total of six Windom Eagles will head to the Class A State Track and Field Meet following their performance at the Section 2A Meet, held Saturday at Mankato West High School.
The Eagles were led by senior Elliot Espenson, who advanced to the state meet in two events. Espenson captured the section championship in the shot put with a throw of 38-9¼. She also advanced as the runner-up in the discus with a career-best throw of 111-5.
Sophomore Kaylee Walklin advanced to the state meet for the second year in a row, finishing as the section champion in the 1,600-meter run. Walklin shattered her own school record in the event, finishing with a time of 5:12.88.
Windom’s other state entrants were the participants of the boys 4×800-meter relay. The team of senior Bryan Macario Rios and juniors Charlie Smith, Thomas Green and Aaden Nauman finished third in the event with a time of 8:17.68, but advanced to the state meet by virtue of surpassing the state qualifying standard, which was 8:20.80. The state qualifying standard is the average fifth-place finish at the previous five state meets.
Girls
Walklin narrowly missed advancing to state in a second event, finishing third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:27.49.
Victoria Robillard placed fifth in the pole vault (8-8). The 4×400 relay team of Walklin, Hannah Dauer, Haidyn Sammons and Robillard finished fourth (4:27.01) while the 4×800 team of Robillard, Dauer, Sammons and Chloe Shamp took sixth (10:47.33).
Boys
Windom’s 4×400 relay team of Macario Rios, Smith, Green and Nauman placed third with a time of 3:37.78.
Nauman took fifth in the 800 (2:05.52). Green was fifth in the 1,600 (4:46.65). Job Ogeka placed fifth in the triple jump (41-8½). Smith finished sixth in the 400 (53.12). Jacob Green was seventh in the 3,200 (10:43.08).
