SECTION BASEBALL: Eagles top Thunderhawks to stay alive

Montevideo 000 010 0 = 1-3-1
Windom 100 200 x = 3-6-4

The Windom Eagle baseball team advanced to the final four of the Section 3AA Tournament with a 3-1 win Thursday afternoon over Montevideo at Marshall’s Legion Field.

Offense was at a premium for both teams, as pitchers combined to allow just nine hits in the game.

Windom was able to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on a Brady Espenson RBI single.

The Eagles added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on a Drew Rothenberger two-run single.

Montevideo tried to mount a rally in the top of the fifth, scoring on a sacrifice fly. But a pop-out ended the inning, leaving the bases loaded.

Montevideo also left two runners on base in the sixth inning and had a runner thrown out at third base in the second inning.

Rothenberger and Josh Garrison each had two hits for the Eagles.

Rothenberger earned the pitching win for the Eagles, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out five. Quintin Tietz recorded the final out of the game for the Eagles to earn a save.

With the win, the Eagles advance to play Saturday at Legion Field in Marshall against the north’s top-seeded team, Paynesville. Paynesville kept its season alive Thursday with a 7-0 win over New London-Spicer. Game time Saturday is 2:30 p.m.

The winner of Saturday’s Windom/Paynesville game plays Tuesday against the loser of Saturday’s winner’s bracket final between Fairmont and Luverne.
