Pirates blank Lakers Wednesday

The Windom Pirates got a dominant pitching performance Wednesday night and did enough on offense to claim a 7-0 victory over the Heron Lake Lakers at Island Park.

Pirate pitchers Ross Ackerman and Kobe Lovell combined to toss a one-hit shutout, with the lone hit of the game for the Lakers coming with one out in the first inning.

Ackerman worked the first seven innings, allowing the one hit without a walk and striking out seven. Lovell pitched the final two innings, fanning five.

The Pirates broke a scoreless tie in the third inning on a two-run single from Luke Gilbertson.

In the seventh, Brett Willaby hit an RBI double and Alex Fink followed with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

Windom put the game away in the eighth. David Volk hit an RBI double, Gilbertson plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Willaby added an RBI single.

Fink and Volk each had three hits in the win. Willaby added a pair of hits.
