The Windom Pirates opened their 2023 season with a pitchers’ duel Sunday afternoon before eventually falling 2-1 in 13 innings to the Milroy Irish at Irish Yard.
The Irish got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on a balk.
Windom tied the game in the top of the ninth. Brett Willaby and Alex Fink singled, Brayden Kreofsky walked and Noah Kloss plated the tying run on a fielder’s choice.
It stayed tied until the bottom of the 13th inning, when a sacrifice fly scored the game-winning run for the Irish.
The Pirates had eight hits and eight walks, but left 19 runners stranded on base in the loss.
Fink had two hits for the Pirates.
Collin Lovell worked the first five innings of no-hit ball, walking three and striking out 12. Luke Gilbertson added six innings of shutout relief, allowing three hits and four walks while fanning nine. Kreofsky took the loss, allowing a run on two hits and two walks in 1-2/3 innings.

Luverne’s offense hammered out 20 hits, including two home runs and four doubles, as the Redbirds rolled to a 25-1 victory over the Mt. Lake Lakers in Mt. Lake’s season-opener Sunday at Luverne.
Luverne plated four runs in the first inning, then hit a pair of two-run home runs in a five-run second.
Mt. Lake’s lone run scored on a Zach Andres RBI single in the top of the seventh.
All three Laker hits came in the seventh inning.
Jon Faber took the pitching loss, allowing nine runs on eight hits in one-plus inning.
