THURSDAY BASEBALL: Eagles fall to Cards, Wolverines fall

The Windom baseball team couldn’t overcome a deficit in the middle innings Thursday afternoon, dropping a 6-4 decision at Luverne.

The Cardinals scored three times in the fourth inning and twice in the fifth, taking a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Windom got on the board in the fifth inning on a Drew Rothenberger sacrifice fly.

In the sixth, Tucker Renquist hit an RBI single and Quintin Tietz hit a sacrifice fly, cutting the Cardinal lead to 5-3.

Windom’s final run scored on a wild pitch. The Eagles had the potential tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh, but a pop-out and a strikeout ended the game.

Tietz and Chayton Struck each had  two hits for the Eagles.

Josh Garrison took the complete-game pitching loss, allowing nine hits and three walks while striking out two.

Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove surged late Thursday, scoring 11 times in its final two at-bats to claim a 14-1 win over Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda at Heron Lake.

The Falcons took an early lead, scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning. Then, Quintyn Vold hit an RBI triple and Jayden Lang had an RBI groundout in the second, giving the Falcons a 3-1 lead.

It stayed that way until the fifth, when the Falcons broke it open with six runs. Dan Kleven and Jake Jackson had RBI singles to spark the rally.

The Falcons put the game away with five runs in the sixth. Vander Mathiowetz and Casey Brown each hit a two-run single.

Jackson and Kleven each had two hits in the win.

Hudsen Jenniges picked up the pitching win, working the first four innings. He allowed one hit, walked four and struck out nine.

Edgerton/Southwest Christian pounded out 10 hits and drew nine walks Thursday, leading to a commanding 14-4 victory over Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey at Mt. Lake.

The Dutchmen raced to an early 5-1 lead after two innings, added a two-run home run in the third and scored seven times in the fourth.

MLAC scored on a Treyton Duerksen groundout in the bottom of the second, cutting the deficit to 5-1. In the fourth, Ashton Toll tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Then, in the fifth, Tanner Schultz had an RBI groundout and a run scored on a wild pitch.

Evan Karschnik took the pitching loss for the Wolverines, working the first 3-2/3 innings. He allowed nine hits and seven walks.
