All eyes on HyLife plant

The calls, emails and questions about the Windom HyLife pork processing plant are seemingly endless and Mayor Dominic Jones confesses that he doesn’t have the answers.

What’s going to happen? When will we know? What about all the workers and the apartments?

“All I can say is that we are ready to help,” Jones said Monday. “Whatever it is. Whoever it is.”

It has been just over a week since HyLife leaders informed employees of their intentions to sell the plant. At a meeting last week, employees received notice of potential job loss under the federal WARN act.

The letter said workers could lose their jobs “in the next few months” if a buyer is not found. The letter placed the job ending date between April 17 and May 1, or between May 19 and June 2. The plant employs roughly 1,000 workers.
