THURSDAY SOFTBALL: Eagles roll to first win

The Windom Eagle fastpitch softball team picked up its first win of the season Thursday, surging past Worthington 11-1 in Worthington.

The Eagles jumped to an early lead with five runs in the top of the second. Olivia Hoffman and Tristyn Maras hit RBI singles and Camryn Elness plated a run with a groundout.

In the third, the Eagles pushed the lead to 9-1 on a wild pitch, a bases-loaded walk and a two-run Anja Nielsen single.

The Eagles added a pair of runs in the fourth on a double steal and a Kadyn Paulson RBI groundout.

Nielsen picked up the pitching win, holding the Trojans to two hits while fanning 11.

Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey did damage early in its season-opener Thursday, rolling to a 13-1 victory over Adrian-Ellsworth at Mt. Lake.

The Wolverines scored four runs in the second inning. Julia Brinkman drew a bases-loaded walk and Jaci Tollefson hit a two-run single.

In the third, the Wolverines stretched their lead. Tollefson hit an RBI single, Annika Brinkman plated a run with a sacrifice fly and MLAC added two runs on an error and one on a bases-loaded walk.

The Wolverines closed the scoring in the fourth inning on a pair of groundouts, an error and an Annika Brinkman RBI single.

Tollefson led the Wolverines with three hits in the win.

Kennedie Simon tossed a one-hitter to earn the pitching win, walking two and striking out seven.

Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove opened the season by running out of gas late, as Edgerton/Southwest Christian surged to a 7-1 victory at Plum Creek Park near Walnut Grove.

The Dutchmen held a 1-0 lead going into the sixth inning, when Edgerton plated three runs to take control of the game.

The lone Falcon run scored in the bottom of the sixth, as Sondra Rindfleisch hit an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 4-1. But ESWC put the game away in the seventh with three insurance runs.

Addeson Jenniges took the pitching loss for the Falcons, allowing eight hits and five walks while striking out three.
