Schools closed, state roads may open at 9 a.m.

Most schools in the region have announced they will not have classes today as crews work to reopen highways throughout Southwest Minnesota.

According to MnDOT, state highways throughout the entire southwest corner of the state remain closed due to blowing snow creating drifts, and yesterday’s treacherous conditions creating accidents and stalled vehicles on roadways. However, MnDOT announced this morning that road closures would be lifted at 9 a.m. if possible.

All state highways in Cottonwood County remain closed as of 8:30 a.m., Friday, as are roads in Jackson, Nobles, Rock, Murray, Pipestone, Lyon and Lincoln counties. Interstate 90 is closed from Sherburn to the South Dakota state line. Highway 60 is closed from St. James to the Iowa state line and Highway 30 is closed from St. James to the South Dakota state line. Highway 71 is closed from Redwood Falls to the Iowa state line.

Schools announcing they have cancelled classes for Friday include Windom, Mt. Lake Public and Red Rock Central. Comfrey has announced it will attempt to begin classes at 11 a.m.
