Marilyn Martha “Marty” (Ibeling) Feil/Peterson was born on August 21, 1934, in Comfrey, Minnesota to John and Elsie (Uhlhorn) Ibeling. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Darfur, Minnesota. Marilyn attended Comfrey High School, where she was proudly crowned Homecoming Queen. She continued her education at Mankato Beauty Academy. She then worked in Mountain Lake for Vivian Demlow at Vivian’s Beauty Shop. During this time, she met Robert Feil while eating ice cream from Worthmore Ice Cream Shop (a hot place to go back in the day) and their romance began.
They were married on October 17, 1954 in Darfur, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Blake, Curtis, and Alison. She later opened an in-home beauty shop named Cut and Curl Boutique, a space built by the Feil Brothers. She was a beautician for 67 years.
Marilyn was an organist at St. John Lutheran Church in Darfur and then at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mountain Lake for 66 years, playing for services and the church choir. She was on both the Mountain Lake Heritage Board and Good Samaritan Board for many years. If you did not find Marilyn in her beauty shop, you would find her in her kitchen as she was a terrific baker and cook. There was never a worry when going to Marilyn’s that one would leave hungry.
She loved her endless treasures and keepsakes (each had its own unique story), enjoyed family history, researching family genealogy, and sharing this knowledge with her family. Each year as the holidays approached, she had a special gift for all along with a tote of “treasures”. Marilyn also enjoyed gardening, canning, and freezing food, antique shopping or just shopping with her friends, reading books and magazines, and playing piano. Robert and Marilyn enjoyed many trips to northern Minnesota, square dancing on their date night, hosting holiday parties, and raising chickens.
Known as a witty, kind, vibrant person, Marilyn enjoyed life to the fullest and went above and beyond for her family, friends, and customers. She passed on her work ethic, cooking traditions, and interests to her family. They helped with household chores and cooking duties while she was busy in her beauty shop, practicing hymns for Sunday services or helping with duties at Heritage Fest.
After Robert passed away in 2003, Marilyn married LeRoy (Pete) Peterson on October 1st, 2005. During their marriage they enjoyed time camping, taking a trip to Alaska that created wonderful memories for them both, attending area social events, and reacquainting with past friends and Pete’s New Hope Church family. Marilyn and Pete enjoyed driving their Farmall and John Deere tractors in local town parades.
Marilyn passed away peacefully, with family by her side, at the Good Samaritan Society – Sogge Memorial in Windom on March 9, 2023.
