SECTION 2A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Indians knock out Wolverines

MLAC 12-15 = 27
SE 29-22 = 51

Sleepy Eye broke loose late in the first half, building a comfortable lead and maintaining it the rest of the way in a 51-27 win over Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey, in the Section 2A Playoffs at St. Peter.

The Indians held the Wolverine offense in check throughout the game, using effective pressure and tightly contesting shot attempts.

Meanwhile, both teams were effective at slowing down the opposition’s leading scorer. Wolverine senior Brooke Naas did not score in the opening half, while Sleepy Eye 1,000-point scorer Kadence Hesse was held to six points in the game – all in the first half.

But late in the first half, it was Sleepy Eye’s Breanna Mertz who found her stroke from the outside. Mertz hit a trio of three-pointers and scored 15 points in the first half, staking the Indians to a 27-12 lead.

Mertz accounted for half of Sleepy Eye’s baskets in the second half and led all scorers with 25 points in the game.

Meanwhile, after being held to four field goals in the opening half, the Wolverines didn’t fare much better in the second half and couldn’t close the gap.

Naas led the Wolverines with seven points in the loss. Alexis Romsdahl added six points.
