SECTION GIRLS BASKETBALL: Late rally lifts Wolverines past MCW

MCW 20-20 = 40
MLAC 17-27 = 44

Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey shook off a pair of sizeable deficits Tuesday night, keeping its season alive with a 44-40 win over Martin County West in the Section 2A playoffs at Mt. Lake.

The Wolverines trailed the entire first half and trailed by as much as six points much of the half before cutting the deficit to three by the end of the opening half.

MLAC was able to tie the game early in the second half, but an 8-0 run by MCW gave the Mavericks a commanding 33-24 lead.

The Wolverines were able to surge late. A three-pointer by Johanna Peterson cut the MCW lead to two. A trey from Annika Brinkman then completed the comeback and gave the Wolverines their first lead of the game. Brooke Naas added a bucket and hit a key free throw late, pushing the MLAC lead to four points. MCW wasn’t able to come back from that deficit.

Naas finished the game leading all scorers with 26 points for the Wolverines. Jaci Tollefson added seven points in the win.
