SECTION BOYS HOCKEY: Cardinals knock out Eagles

Luverne controlled the final two periods Friday, pulling away for a 5-2 victory over the Windom Area boys hockey team in the Section 3A Tournament at Luverne.

The Cardinals outshot the Eagles 37-10 over the final two periods, rallying from an early 1-0 deficit to score five straight goals.

Windom Area got on the board first, scoring with 3:36 left in the opening period when Sonny Heil rifled a wrist shot over the shoulder of the Cardinal goalie for a 1-0 lead.

But Luverne answered, scoring 6:29 into the second period to tie the game, then taking the lead with 36 seconds left in the second period.

The Cardinals added a pair of goals in the middle of the third period, then tacked on a late empty-net goal for a 5-1 lead. Windom Area scored the game’s final goal, when Brady Espenson scored with 51 seconds left on the clock.

Luverne outshot the Eagles 53-15 for the game. Goalie Adam Dahna finished with 48 saves in the loss.
