THURSDAY GIRLS HOCKEY: Cards hold off Eagles

The Windom Area girls hockey team couldn’t record the equalizing goal down the stretch Thursday night before Luverne added an insurance goal, taking a 4-2 victory at the Windom Arena.

Windom Area tied the game at 1-1 in the first period on a goal from Lyvia McManigle, but the Cardinals regained the lead less than a minute later.

Luverne took a 3-1 lead into the final period when the Eagles pulled to within 3-2 on a goal from Ella Dockter with 7:34 remaining. But Luverne outshot the Eagles 20-5 in the third period, keeping the Eagles away from their net to prevent Windom Area from tying the game. Luverne’s Ellisyn Van Batavia sealed the win with a goal with 2:24 left on the clock.

Luverne outshot the Eagles 58-21 for the game. Goalie Fiona Robillard finished with 54 saves in the loss.
