THURSDAY BOYS HOCKEY: Eagles rally late, top Packers in OT

Windom Area 0-3-1-1 = 5
Austin 0-0-4-0 = 4

The Windom Area boys hockey team opened the season in thrilling fashion Thursday night, rallying from a late deficit to force overtime, then scoring the game-winner for a 5-4 victory at Austin.

After a scoreless first period, the Eagles put up three goals in just over three minutes in the second period. Nick Espenson scored the first goal of the season for the Eagles, while Brady Espenson added a pair of goals to give Windom Area a 3-0 lead.

But Austin stormed back in the third period, netting four goals in a four-minute stretch to take a 4-3 advantage.

The Eagles got the equalizer with just over two minutes on the clock, when Karson LaCanne scored off an assist from Luke Anderson.

Then, with under two minutes to go in overtime, Brady Espenson took a feed from LaCanne to finish off a hat trick and send the Eagles home with a win.

The Eagles outshot the Packers 64-33 in the game. Goalie Grant Dronen finished with 29 saves in the win.
