Girls top Packers for first win

The Windom Area girls hockey team had an offensive eruption on the road Saturday, pulling away late for a 10-6 victory at Austin.

The Eagles struck first in the opening period on goals from Madyson Fredin and Madelyn Schumacher.

Marenna Bang added a goal early in the second period, and Reagan Haugen and Mataya Hall added back-to-back goals late in the period to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead.

Bang netted her second goal of the game 11 seco9nds into the third period, but Austin answered with back-to-back goals, cutting the Eagle lead to 6-4.

Haugen’s second goal of the game gave the Eagles a 7-4 lead, but Austin answered quickly, cutting the Eagle lead to 7-5.

Windom Area then closed the game strong, as Gretta Smith scored her first varsity goal. Lyvia McManigle added a goal and Fredin’s second goal of the game gave the Eagles a 10-5 lead. Austin scored the final goal with 17 seconds left on the clock.

The Eagles outshot the Packers 27-23 for the game. Goalie Fiona Robillard finished with 17 saves in the victory.
