Cougar sightings near Mt. Lake

Trail users in Mt. Lake should be aware that there have been reported sightings of a cougar and two cubs near the Mt. Lake Trail.

The Mt. Lake Lake Commission is advising the public that the cougar and cubs were recently spotted near the northwest portion of the trail.

The cougar and cubs were spotted on DNR land that is adjacent to the trail.

Anyone using the trail is advised to be cautious and to report any sightings of a cougar or cougar cubs to the DNR.

DNR Wildlife Manager Brian Nyborg noted the cougar sightings have not been confirmed by the DNR, and that he personally has not seen reports or pictures of the suspected cougar.

“I have no doubt that it’s possible there’s a cougar,” Nyborg said. “Nobody has sent any pictures to me, but it’s possible something was sent to (conservation officer) Dustin Miller. Cougars are always on the move and they occasionally travel through this region, looking for new territory.”

Nyborg added that users of the trail should be aware of their surroundings. Anyone seeing a suspected cougar should contact the DNR Wildlife office in Windom.
