Eagles take sixth at SMSU Tourney

The Windom Eagle volleyball team posted a 3-2 record and finished sixth overall at the Jimmy John’s Classic Tournament, held at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.

Meanwhile, the Red Rock Central volleyball team posted a 1-4 record at the tournament.

Windom opened pool play with a 2-0 sweep over Lakeview and claimed a 2-1 victory over Brandon-Evansville. That sent the Eagles into the tournament’s Gold Bracket on Saturday.

There, the Eagles lost to the state’s top-ranked Class A team, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, 2-0. The Eagles rebounded with a 2-1 win over MACCRAY, but dropped a 2-0 decision to Watertown-Mayer to finish sixth overall.

Charlee Huska led the Eagles at the service line, going 33-of-36 with seven aces. Makenna McNamara went 36-of-43 with six aces and Tristyn Maras was 26-of-34 with five aces.

Maras finished the tourney with a team-high 56 kills. Elliot Espenson had 23 kills and five solo blocks.

McNamara handed out 57 set assists. Kadyn Paulson finished with 42 digs.

RRC opened pool play with a 2-0 loss to St. Peter and a 2-0 loss to Renville County West. In the tournament bracket, the Falcons fell 2-0 to Central Minnesota Christian and 2-1 to Hills-Beaver Creek before claiming a 2-1 victory over Lakeview.

Sondra Rindfleisch led the Falcons with 23 kills and seven solo blocks for the tourney. Abby Evans added 18 and Jada Radmaker had 11.

Rindfleisch fired nine ace serves on 34-of-36 serving. Maia Scheffler was 52-of-54 with six aces. Emily DeCock was 39-of-43 with five aces.

DeCock finished with 57 set assists. Scheffler had a team-high 38 digs. Reilly Hubin had 37 digs.
