Demo of ML auditorium floor begins

The long project to replace the floor at the Mt. Lake Public School auditorium began this week.

At Monday’s school board meeting, Activities Director Shawn Naas gave a brief update on the extent of the project and the timeline for completion.

A summer thunderstorm with heavy rainfall caused a pipe in an adjacent room to burst. The water seeped beneath the wooden gym floor, causing it to buckle and cup. Naas added there also were wet spots on the tar paper beneath the floor.

The wood floor must first be removed. Then, a new floor will be installed.

Naas stated once the floor is installed, it needs 60 days to acclimate to the environment before it can be sanded, painted and waxed.

Naas said that the best-case scenario for the project would be completion around mid-November. That would mean minimal disruption to the practice schedule for girls and boys basketball.

Naas stated the gym in Comfrey will be used for volleyball season and will be ready for the start of basketball practice, if needed.

Additionally, the fall musical will need to be relocated, with the BARC Center in Windom having been contacted.
