Fairmont eliminates Pirates

Windom 001 310 100 = 6-9-5
Fairmont 102 040 13x = 11-12-2

The Windom Pirates saw their 2022 season come to a premature end Friday night, dropping an 11-6 decision at Fairmont to lose the best-of-three Region 13C playoff series two games to none.

The Pirates briefly held a lead by scoring three runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth. But a four-run fifth inning gave Fairmont the lead for good, and the Martins tacked on four late insurance runs.

Trailing 1-0 in the third, the Pirates scored on a Nick Christensen single to tie the game.

Fairmont plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but Windom took the lead in the top of the fourth. Noah Kloss ripped an RBI double and Brett Willaby and Luke Gilbertson hit back-to-back RBI singles.

Windom pushed the lead to 5-3 in the fifth when Alex Fink led off the inning with a solo home run.

But in the bottom of the fifth, Fairmont plated four runs, using three hits and an error to take the lead.

The Pirates were able to cut the deficit to 7-6 in the top of the seventh, scoring on a passed ball. But Fairmont scored a run in the bottom of the inning, then plated three in the bottom of the eighth on a pair of Pirate errors to claim the 11-6 victory.

Christensen had three hits in the loss for the Pirates.

Kobe Lovell took the pitching loss, working the first 5-1/3 innings.

Fairmont will face Luverne in one Region 13C semifinal series, beginning Wednesday in Luverne. Milroy hosts Hadley in the other semifinal series that starts Wednesday. The four remaining teams in the tournament will each draft a pitcher from a previously-eliminated team, with that draft taking place tonight.
