The Windom Sr. Legion Post 206 baseball team had a late rally come up short Thursday in the opening round of the Sub-State Tournament in St. James.
Luverne led 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Windom rallied for a pair of runs before Luverne closed out a 4-3 victory.
Luverne got on the board with a pair of runs in the third inning, but Windom answered with a run in the fourth. Brady Espenson reached on an error, stole two bases and scored when Noah Armstrong reached on an error.
Luverne added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, taking a 4-1 lead. But Post 206 tried to mount a late comeback. With one out in the seventh, Tucker Renquist reached on a single. Braydon Kreofsky hit a two-out single. Drew Rothenberger reached on an error, scoring a run, and Henry Erickson hit an RBI single. With the tying run at third and the potential winning run at first, a strikeout ended the game.
Armstrong took the pitching loss, working 6-2/3 innings. He allowed six hits, walked six and struck out seven.
With the loss, Windom drops to the elimination bracket of the tournament. Windom will face Blue Earth today at 11 a.m., at St. James.
