The Windom Pirates used a fast start Wednesday night to sink the Mt. Lake Lakers 12-1 in First Nite League action at Island Park.
Wednesday’s game also served as Strike Out Cancer Night, in conjunction with Relay For Life. Events throughout the evening raised money for the fight against cancer.
The Lakers got on the board first, scoring in the top of the first when Connor Jones scored on the back end of a double steal attempt.
It proved to be the Lakers’ only run of the game, as Pirate pitcher Kobe Lovell worked six strong innings, striking out seven.
The Pirates answered in the bottom of the first, sending 11 hitters to the plate and scoring seven runs. Alex Fink started the fireworks with an RBI double, followed by a Lovell RBI single. Kyle Espenson hit an RBI single, Conner Redman drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, and Brett Willaby and Nick Christensen hit RBI singles.
Lovell added an RBI groundout and Redman drove in a run on a fielder’s choice in the second.
The Pirate lead stayed at 9-1 until the sixth inning. Espenson hit a two-run single and Redman plated a run with a single.
Fink and Espenson had three hits each for the Pirates. Christensen, Lovell and Noah Kloss had two hits each.
Tkoel Iyechad had two of the Lakers’ three hits.
Lovell worked six innings for the win, allowing three hits. He walked two and struck out seven.
Rhinley Kazuma took the loss for the Lakers, working the first two innings.
