Pirates edge past Redbirds

The Windom Pirates raced to an early lead Wednesday night and hung on late, defeating the Luverne Redbirds 4-3 in a First Nite/Gopher interleague game at Island Park.

The Pirates started the game strong, scoring single runs in each of the first four innings to build a 4-1 lead.

Windom got on the board in the first on a Noah Kloss RBI single. Nick Christensen added an RBI single in the second. David Volk hit an RBI single in the third and Alex Fink hit an RBI single in the fourth. Each of the RBI singles came with two outs in the inning.

Luverne tried to mount a rally, scoring in the top of the eighth to cut the Pirate lead to 4-2. Then, in the ninth, Luverne added a run and had runners on the corners with two outs, when Luke Gilbertson struck out the Redbird cleanup batter to end the game.

Fink led the Pirates with two hits in the game.

Collin Lovell earned the pitching win, working the first eight innings. He allowed two runs on six hits, walked four and struck out eight.

Laker games called off

The Mt. Lake Lakers scheduled non-league game Wednesday night against Cleveland in St. James was cancelled due to a lack of available players on Cleveland’s end. The game will not be rescheduled.

The Lakers’ scheduled game against Fox Lake Sunday in Mt. Lake has been postponed due to a schedule conflict on Fox Lake’s end. No reschedule date has been determined.
