Big inning keeps Pirates unbeaten

Fox Lake 000 000 000 = 0-2-0
Windom 000 000 60x = 6-7-1

For much of Sunday’s game, Windom and Fox Lake were locked in a classic First Nite League pitcher’s duel.

Windom’s Luke Gilbertson and Fox Lake’s Cayden Fischer swapped hanging zeroes on the scoreboard for the first six innings.

But in the bottom of the seventh, Windom finally broke through, plating six runs on its way to a 6-0 victory at Island Park.

The Pirates had scoring threats earlier in the game, leaving two runners on base in the third and leaving the bases loaded in the sixth.

Finally, in the seventh, Alex Fink broke the scoreless tie with a two-run single. Kobe Lovell plated a run with a fielder’s choice and Noah Kloss hit an RBI single, making the score 4-0. Kyle Espenson and David Volk then hit back-to-back RBI doubles, giving the Pirates a 6-0 lead.

That was all the support Gilbertson would need, as he worked eight shutout innings, holding the Foxes to two hits while fanning nine.

Mt. Lake 000 000 200 = 2-6-2
Pipestone 010 001 001 = 3-4-1

Mt. Lake 000 340 1 = 8-9-1
Ruthton 100 211 0 = 5-13-4

The Mt. Lake Lakers found themselves in the win column for the first time this season on Sunday, grabbing the second half of a pair of road games.

Mt. Lake opened Sunday by rallying in the top of the seventh inning to force extra innings before dropping a 3-2 decision at Pipestone.

Pipestone scored single runs in the second and sixth innings. Down 2-0 entering the final inning, the Lakers tied the game when Tykole Iyechad reached on a fielder’s choice to plate a run. He later scored on a throwing error, tying the game.

But Pipestone put runners on base in the ninth on back-to-back walks. A sacrifice bunt moved the winning run to third and the game ended on a wild pitch.

Connor Jones led the Lakers with two hits. He also took the pitching loss, working the final 2-1/3 innings in relief.

In the nightcap, the Lakers found their offensive touch in the middle innings in an 8-5 win at Ruthton.

The Lakers took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning. Levi Jahnke and Rhinley Kazuma hit RBI singles and Trenton Renquist drew a bases-loaded walk.

In the fifth, the Lakers scored on an error and a wild pitch before Zach Spinks ripped a two-run double.

Jacob Brey added an RBI single in the seventh.

Jahnke had three hits in the win.

Brey was the winning pitcher, working the first five innings. He allowed nine hits, walked two and struck out five.
