Early defensive woes doomed the Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey baseball team Thursday as the Wolverines fell 12-4 to Martin County West in the Section 2A playoffs at Welcome.
The loss ends the Wolverines’ season with a record of 8-12.
MCW capitalized on an error in the first inning to score three runs, taking a quick lead.
Trailing 4-2 in the third, the Wolverines tried to mount a comeback. Kolby Kremmin hit a two-run single in the third. The Wolverines added a run on an error in the top of the fourth, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
MCW hit a two-run double and scored two on an error in the bottom of the fourth, stretching its lead to 8-3.
MLAC added a run on a Tanner Koetzle groundout in the top of the fifth, but the Mavericks added four more runs in the bottom of the inning, sealing the win.
Sam Pidde and Kremmin each had three hits in the loss.
Alex Blom took the pitching loss, working the first four innings.
