Eagles hold off Huskies

The Windom Eagle baseball team made an early lead stand Thursday afternoon, claiming a 5-3 victory over Jackson County Central in Jackson.

The Eagles got on the board in the top of the second when Brady Espenson scored on an error.

In the third, Brayden Kreofsky lined an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fourth when Chayton Struck scored on an error and Cody Hockel scored on the back end of a double steal.

Windom’s final run scored in the fifth on a Zach Espenson RBI single.

JCC mounted a comeback in the sixth, plating three runs. But with the potential tying run at the plate, a JCC runner was thrown out trying to steal, ending the threat.

The Eagles retired the Huskies in order in the seventh inning, sealing the win.

Kreofsky and Hockel had two hits each in the win.

Noah Armstrong worked five strong innings to earn the victory, allowing two runs and one walk while striking out three. Kreofsky worked a perfect seventh inning to earn a save.

With rain in the forecast for Friday, Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove juggled its schedule to capitalize on perfect weather Thursday. The Falcons ended up splitting a pair of games, falling 11-1 to Adrian-Ellsworth before defeating Lakeview 7-5.

Against Adrian-Ellsworth, the Falcons fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first and never recovered.

RRC/WWG’s lone run came in the second inning. Keaton Skarupa led off with a walk, stole second, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a squeeze bunt from Dan Kleven.

Skarupa had two of the Falcons’ three hits in the loss.

Kleven took the pitching loss, allowing five runs on six hits in 5-1/3 innings of work. He walked two and struck out three.

In the nightcap, the Falcons again fell behind early, giving up three runs in the top of the first.

RRC/WWG got on the board in the bottom of the first when Jake Jackson singled, moved up on two walks and scored on a balk.

Trailing 4-1 in the fourth, the Falcons rallied. Cole VanDeWiele hit an RBI single, a run scored when Jackson reached on an error and Ashton Juhnke unloaded a three-run triple, giving the Falcons a 6-4 lead.

Jackson hit an RBI double to bring home the Falcons’ final run in the sixth inning.

Jackson and Hudsen Jenniges each had two hits in the win.

Juhnke picked up the pitching win, working 3-2/3 innings of relief. He allowed a run on three hits, walked six and struck out five. Isaac Simonson pitched the final 1-1/3 innings for a save.

Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey couldn’t overcome an early deficit Thursday afternoon, dropping an 8-2 decision to Murray County Central in Mt. Lake.

MCC broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third, capitalizing on three Wolverine errors to score a pair of runs. The Rebels then scored in each of the final four innings, taking an 8-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

The Wolverines plated both their runs in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a wild pitch and a an error. But with two outs and the bases loaded, a fielder’s choice groundout ended the game.

Sam Pidde, Ian Penner, Caleb Simon and Landon Boldt had the lone hits in the loss for the Wolverines.

Alex Blom took the pitching loss, allowing five runs on six hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out one.
