Mt. Lake area resident targeted by threats, fake photos scam

A Mt. Lake area resident contacted the Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Department recently to report a scam involving threatening photos.

According to Sheriff Jason Purrington, a man told deputies he received a number of threatening text messages from a number he did not recognize. The texts demanded money. The texter sent photos of people who had supposedly been assaulted, in an effort to show what could happen if the victim did not send money.

Upon investigation, deputies found the photos were duplicates of photos that are readily available online. No funds were lost in the scam and deputies were unable to track down the scammer.
