Church group’s lefse making is a holiday tradition

In countless Minnesota communities, lefse and Christmas have gone hand-in-hand for generations.
In few places is that more evident than at American Lutheran Church, where the church basement has been headquarters for late-fall lefse-making since 1987. A group of church members gather every other year to make lefse to sell at the church’s holiday fair.
“Lefse has always been a hot commodity,” said Karen Skarphol, who heads up the effort. “Not a lot of people make it anymore. We work five weeks on this project.”
