Board hears request to host gun show

A schedule conflict at the Windom Community Center put the Windom School Board in what could be an uncomfortable situation at Monday’s monthly work session.

As a last minute addition to the agenda, the board discussed a request from the Windom Chamber of Commerce, asking if the annual Gun and Knife Show could be held at the school.

Traditionally, the show is held at the end of October. But, because of a schedule conflict, the 2022 show cannot be held at the Community Center.

“Current state law and our own school board policy would allow the district to potentially host the Gun and Knife Show,” Supt. Wayne Wormstadt said. “It would involve a rental of the Blue Gym and lobby by the Chamber. The event would take place on a Saturday and Sunday, when there are no other events going on at the school. And the rest of the building would be secured.”

Despite the fact the district could host the event, the board was cautious.

“We really should get some feedback from the community, to see if there are any strong opinions about it,” board member Barb Jones said.

No action was taken on the request.
