Former Mt. Lake pastor now ‘builds’ different ministry

For 35 years, Galen Kauffman ministered to people from a pulpit, including the last 13 years at Bethel Mennonite Church in Mt. Lake.

In May, he retired from full-time ministry, but is still ministering to people — not from the pulpit, but from a little office in the second floor of the Business, Arts & Recreation Center in Windom.

Kauffman was hired as the first program manager for the Southwest division of Rebuilding Together Minnesota. The organization’s motto is “repairing homes, revitalizing communities, rebuilding lives.”

The motto is right up Kauffman’s alley.

“For all but the last 13 years, I was a bi-vocational pastor — part-time pastor and part-time carpenter,” Kauffman says, who owned Kauffman Kitchen & Bath.

“We believe that everybody should be able to live in a home where they feel safe and comfortable. It’s not quite up there with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but if you think about it, it’s pretty close.”
