School lunches and breakfasts for all students in the Windom Area School system will be free once again for the 2021-22 school year.
Supt. Wayne Wormstadt noted that the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the federal school lunch program, offered free meals for students during the COVID pandemic and is continuing to offer that program, nationwide, this school year.
Despite that, Wormstadt stressed it is still important for parents to fill out applications for the free/reduced lunch program if their family is eligible, noting that those applications drive state funding for the district, which allows the district to hire more staff and offer smaller class sizes, particularly at the elementary level. Those applications are confidential and will not change a student’s meal status.
