Eagles open with win over Fairmont

The Windom Eagle volleyball team got its 2021 season off to a strong start Saturday morning, defeating Fairmont 3-0 in the Big South Conference Showcase, played at St. James.

Windom was able to overcome a rash of miscues, both from the service line and at the net, to pull away late in each set.

Windom had a strong of service aces from Tristyn Maras to spark a rally. Maras finished the match 8-of-10 serving, firing seven aces. She also had a team-high 12 kills.

Sydney Skarphol and Kameron Rupp each added 10 kills in the win. Skarphol was 7-of-9 serving with two aces. Rupp had a team-high two solo blocks.

Jenna Veenker finished with 13 set assists. Charlee Huska added 10 assists. Kendyl Sammons finished with six digs.

RRC 25-18-20-25-15 = 3
Springfield 22-25-25-14-07 = 2

Red Rock Central opened its 2021 season Thursday in dramatic fashion, rallying from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Springfield 3-2 at Springfield.

The Falcons won the opening set 25-22, but dropped the next two sets. RRC then cruised to a 25-14 win in set four and claimed a 15-7 victory in the final set.

The Falcons had a massive night from senior Karli Arkell, who blasted a career-high 33 kills in the victory. Arkell added three solo blocks.

Josie Horning added eight kills and Sondra Rindfleisch tallied six.

Emily DeCock went 24-of-25 serving with two aces. Rindfleisch was 20-of-22 with an ace.

Nora Hemmingsen finished with a team-high 29 set assists. DeCock added 20 assists. Lilly Stavnes had a team-high 30 digs.

MLAC 10-10-11 = 0

Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey couldn’t get momentum on its side Thursday night, as Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s rolled to a season-opening 3-0 sweep over the Wolverines at Comfrey.

The Knights pulled away in the middle of each set to capture the victory.

Michala Morin led MLAC with seven kills in the match. Brooke Naas added four kills and two blocks.

Jaci Tollefson was 7-of-8 serving with an ace. Tollefson added 12 set assists. Morin and Naas each finished with nine digs.
