MLC to join National School Lunch Program

The school year begins today (Wednesday) for Mt. Lake Christian School, the first of all Cottonwood County schools to get the academic year underway. And when students return there will be one big change that they may not even notice.

Every student at MLC, which this year is nearly 100 students, will be receiving free lunch and breakfast.

“We are now on the free and reduced school lunch program that we haven’t been on for several years,” says Jonathan Belgarde, who begins his second year as MLC’s head of school. “All of our students are going to receive free lunch and free breakfast. That’s a big development for us this year”

Indeed, MLC learned earlier this year that it is eligible to be a part of the National School Lunch Program, a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day.

“We’re very excited to offer that,” Belgarde continues. “And we just approved offering breakfast as well.”
