County declines request to assist with RRC vote

At Tuesday’s meeting, Cottonwood County Commissioners discussed a request from the Red Rock Central School Board to assist with a proposed building referendum vote in November.

Auditor/Treasurer Donna Torkelson stated the district had designated the high school building in Lamberton as the sole polling place for the election. Because the majority of the land in the district is in Cottonwood County, the board asked the county auditor/treasurer’s office to conduct the absentee portion of the election for 45 days prior to the date of the November general election.

Commissioners and Torkelson expressed hesitation to assist.

“It’s been a controversial subject and there have been multiple calls to multiple commissioners and the auditor/treasurer’s office about it from residents of the district,” Board Chair Tom Appel said. “I think it would be a lot to ask that office to take on that task at this point.”

The consensus of the board to have the auditor/treasurer’s office decline the request from RRC. No action was taken.
