Section 3A Meet
Four area athletes will head to St. Michael-Albertville High School next week after qualifying for the Class A State Track and Field Meet at Thursday’s Section 3A Meet in Redwood Falls.
Windom will be represented by three athletes at the state meet, while Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey had one state qualifier.
In the team standings, Windom’s girls placed fourth with 53 points. Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central was 20th with 7.5 and MLAC was 21st with 5.5. Luverne won the team title with 102 points.
For the boys, Windom finished 14th with 24.5 points. MLAC was 19th with 20 points. Luverne won the team title with 58 points.

The Eagle girls have two state qualifiers, led by double-event section champion Delaney Smith. The Eagle senior dominated the throws at the section meet, surpassing the state’s qualifying standard on her way to winning both events.
Smith broke her own Section 3A Meet record in the shot put, winning with a throw of 44-5. Smith set the previous record of 42-11¾ at the 2019 section meet. Smith also won the section discus title with a throw of 125-6.
She’ll be joined at the state meet by senior teammate Gracie Bucher, who advanced to state as the section runner-up in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:01.02.
The Eagle girls added a third-place finish from senior Jadyn Wormstadt in the high jump, with a leap of 5-0. Wormstadt was tied for second, but lost a jump-off at 5-1.
Eighth-grader Kaylee Walklin placed fourth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:35.39.
The Eagles also came up just short in the 4×400 relay, as the team of Bucher, Walklin, Hannah Dauer and Lucy Stevens placed third with a time of 4:15.86. Windom’s team of Wormstadt, Hadley Sammons, Haidyn Sammons and Walklin finished fifth in the 4×800 relay (11:01.29).
Stevens finished eighth in the 200 (28.17). Haidyn Sammons took eighth in the 1,600 (5:55.49).
For the Eagle boys, junior Dylan Serreyn advanced to the state meet as the section runner-up in the high jump, clearing 5-11. Serreyn also placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 41-6½.
Junior Alex Altman finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 130-11 and added a sixth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 45-2½.
Senior Cameron Alm added a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 53.78.
MLAC
Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey had its first state qualifier in six seasons, as freshman Kody Wassman advanced to the state meet for the first time.
Wassman captured section runner-up honors in the 3,200-meter run, finishing in 10:23.12. Wassman added a seventh-place finish in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:48.86.
Junior Caden Swoboda placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run, finishing just ahead of Wassman in 4:47.84. Junior Cayden LaPointe added a sixth-place finish in the 110-meter high hurdles (17.05) and finished seventh in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (44.20).
Jordan Toll added an eighth-place finish in the 200 dash with a time of 24.06. MLAC’s team of Matthew Wiebe, Ben Nachreiner, Jordan Linscheid and Toll placed eighth in the 4×100 relay (46.96).
For the girls, junior Riley Schroeder earned the Wolverines’ top finish as part of a four-way tie for fourth place in the pole vault. Schroeder cleard the bar at 8-2.
Junior Lana Kestner added a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 1:04.04.
WWG/RRC
WWG/RRC’s girls were led by a pair of fifth-place performances.
Senior Elizabeth Strock finished fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:03.73). Junior Kelsey DeSmith finished tied for fifth place in the high jump, clearing 4-10.
Senior Kennedy Vold and freshman Abby Wiggins each tied for ninth place in the pole vault, clearing 7-8.
