SCAM ALERT: Windom resident reports extortion scam

Scams come in many forms, including some that are blatant extortion attempts.

Such was the case last week, when a Windom man reported a scam effort to police. The man said that the scammer sent a text stating that if he did not send money, they would publicize nude photos of him.

“It doesn’t matter if the photos exist, they (the scammers) will say they do,” said Cory Hillesheim, assistant chief for the Windom Police Department. “People need to be aware of this and if they get these text messages, report them.”

Hillesheim said the man did not send money to the scammers.
