Pirates improve to 2-0, shut out Royals

The Windom Pirates had another dominant pitching performance Sunday afternoon, improving to 2-0 on the young season with a 7-0 victory over Ruthton at Island Park.

Collin Lovell worked the first four innings to pick up the win, holding the Royals to a single hit and striking out nine. Kobe Lovell followed with four innings of one-hit relief, walking one and fanning six. Dane Nielsen struck out two in a single inning of relief work.

At the plate, the Pirates did all of their damage in the second and third innings. In the second, Joel Riordan ripped an RBI triple, Alex Borsgard had an RBI single and Alex Fink plated a run with a double.

In the third, Kyle Espenson hit an RBI double, Jacob Johnson added an RBI single and Fink ripped a two-run double.

Fink finished with three hits and three RBI in the win. Borsgard added three hits in the victory.

Springfield’s offense erupted in the fifth inning Friday night, as the Tigers cruised to a 22-2 non-league victory over the Mt. Lake Lakers in amateur baseball action at Springfield.

Mt. Lake briefly took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning. Jon Faber lined a two-run single to plate both Laker runs.

But the Laker bats were silent the rest of the way, as Springfield held the Lakers to three hits.

Meanwhile, Springfield regained the lead with a three-run second and led 5-2 going to the bottom of the fifth. That’s when the Tigers sent 19 hitters to the plate, scoring 13 runs to take an 18-2 lead.

Faber, Tylor Duerksen and Tkoel Iyechad had the lone Laker hits in the game.

Wyatt Stevens took the pitching loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits and four walks in four-plus unnings of work. He struck out one.
