Eagle softball splits with Fairmont

The Windom Eagle softball team rolled in the opening game of a doubleheader Saturday, but couldn’t sustain its momentum in the nightcap, taking a split with Fairmont at the Windom Recreation Area.

The Eagles won the opener 10-0, but lost the nightcap 17-5.

In the opener, the Eagles broke a scoreless tie in the third inning. Allison Letcher hit an RBI single, Jenna Veenker plated a run with a groundout, Kait Huska had an RBI single and a run scored with Camryn Elness reached on an error.

Windom closed out the win with six runs in the fifth inning. Veenker launched a two-run home run, Ellie Maricle hit a two-run single and two runs scored on errors.

Huska finished with two hits in the win.

Maricle earned the pitching win, scattering three hits and walking one while fanning three.

In the nightcap, the Eagles saw the lead slip away, as one big inning lifted Fairmont to a 17-5 win.

Windom got on the board in the top of the second when Elliot Espenson smashed a two-run home run.

The Eagles stretched their lead to 4-0 in the top of the second. A run scored when Huska reached on an error and Elness added an RBI single.

But Fairmont’s offense roared to life in the bottom of the third. The Cardinals sent 21 batters to the plate and scored 17 runs. The Cardinals put together 12 hits, three walks and two Eagle errors to do their damage.

Windom’s final run scored in the fifth inning, as Huska hit a solo home run.

Maricle, Elness and Espenson each had two hits in the loss.

Veenker took the pitching loss, allowing 12 runs on seven hits and four walks in 2-2/3 innings.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead and held on to defeat Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove 9-8 Friday in Tyler.

The Falcons saw the lead slip away three times in the game.

RRC/WWG tied the game at 1-1 in the second when Bianca Weis scored on a wild pitch.

In the third, Hailey Amsden and Mercedes Myers each hit an RBI double, giving the Falcons a 3-1 lead.

After RTR took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third, the Falcons regained the lead in the fourth. Nora Hemmingsen, Isabella Rentschler and Amsden each hit an RBI single.

Trailing 7-6 in the top of the sixth, the Falcons regained the lead. Avery Schoer and Sondra Rindfleisch hit RBI singles, giving RRC/WWG an 8-7 lead.

But RTR strung together a walk and three hits to score a pair in the bottom of the sixth, then held RRC/WWG scoreless in the seventh to claim the win.

Isabella Rentschler had four hits in the loss for the Falcons.

Nicole Schroepfer took the pitching loss, allowing nine runs on 11 hits. She walked four and struck out 10.
