Eagle baseball salvages split

The Windom baseball team rallied to win the opener of a doubleheader Saturday, but Fairmont took the nightcap to salvage a split at Island Park.

Windom won the opener 6-5 in eight innings, but dropped the nightcap 12-6.

In the opener, the Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first when Conner Redman scored on a balk and Brayden Kreofsky hit an RBI single.

The Eagles took a 4-2 lead in the second on a two-run Kade Sammons single.

Fairmont scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game, then took a 5-4 lead with a run in the top of the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, Ethan Pohlman hit an RBI double and Trent Renquist gave the Eagles with win with a triple.

Redman and Sammons each had two hits in the win.

Austin Doorenbos picked up the pitching win, working the final inning in relief. He allowed one hit and struck out one.

In the nightcap, the Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles battled back. Sam Doorenbos and Alex Espenson hit back-to-back RBI singles in the second. Windom then took a 6-3 lead in the third. A run scored on an error, Brady Espenson plated a run with a squeeze bunt, Alex Espenson hit an RBI single and a run scored on a passed ball.

But in the bottom of the third, Fairmont regained the lead for good, scoring five runs. The Cardinals added a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to seal the win.

Austin Doorenbos and Alex Espenson each had two hits in the loss.

Hunter Walklin took the pitching loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks in 2-1/3 innings.
