Wolverines hold off Nicollet Friday

Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey capitalized on mistakes early and timely hits late Friday, capturing a 7-5 victory at Nicollet.

The Wolverines took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning when Adam Veerkamp walked and eventually scored when Sam Pidde reached on an error. Landon Boldt and Pidde later scored on wild pitches.

In the top of the sixth, the Wolverines took a 5-2 lead on an RBI double from Sebastian Rehnelt and a Sam Stade RBI single.

Then, in the seventh, MLAC stretched the lead to 7-3 when Caleb Simon plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Ian Penner hit an RBI single.

Nicollet scored twice and had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but a fly out to center field ended the game.

Rehnelt led the Wolverines with two hits.

Pidde worked the first five innings to earn the pitching win. He allowed two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out eight. Kolby Kremmin pitched the final two innings for a save, allowing three unearned runs on two walks. He struck out three.

Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove struggled at the plate Friday afternoon, leading to a 12-2 loss to Russell-Tyler-Ruthton at Ruthton.

The Falcons had just two baserunners until the top of the sixth inning, when RRC/WWG plated both its runs. Jackson Shannon hit a two-out single, Mason Irlbeck reached on an error and Cory Anderson smashed a two-run double, making the score at the time 5-2.

But RTR sent 11 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, scoring seven times to end the game.

Luke Willhite took the pitching loss, allowing two unearned runs on three hits in two innings. He struck out four.
