State COVID-related funeral assistance is now available

Cottonwood County Emergency Management reports that families who lost loved ones to COVID-19 are able to apply for funeral assistance through the state of Minnesota, beginning today.

In instances of a COVID-19 funeral expense, families should have:

  • An official death certificate that attributes the death directly or indirectly to COVID-19 and shows the death occurred in the United State, including U.S. territories and the District of Columbia.
  • Funeral expense documents (receipts, funeral home contact, etc.) that includes the applicant’s name, the deceased person’s name, the amount of funeral expenses and the dates the funeral expenses happened.
  • Proof of funds received from other sources specifically for use toward funeral costs. The state is not able to duplicate benefits received from burial or funeral insurance, financial assistance received from voluntary agencies, government agencies or other sources.

Those applying should contact the COVID-19 funeral assistance number between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Central Time. The number is (844) 684-6333.
