Windom 001 013 0 = 5-10-0
Luverne 300 040 x = 7-13-0
A pair of big innings for Luverne proved to be too much for the Windom Eagle baseball team to overcome Friday, as the Eagles dropped their season-opener 7-5 at Luverne.
The Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the first and four more in the fifth, accounting for all of their runs.
Windom got on the board in the top of the third when Austin Doorenbos hit an RBI double. The Eagles cut the Cardinal lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth on a Cody Hockel RBI single.
After Luverne plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles got three back in the top of the sixth. Alex Espenson hit a two-run single and Doorenbos added an RBI single. But with the potential tying run in scoring position, a comebacker to the mound ended the threat.
The Eagles got the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but a flyout ended the game.
Doorenbos, Hockel, Brayden Kreofsky and Espenson had two hits each for the Eagles.
Doorenbos took the pitching loss, allowing three runs on four hits in two innings. He walked one and struck out three.
