Two Windom students win titles, 9 advance to Section 3A speech

Two Windom Area High School speech students claimed individual titles and will lead another seven teammates into Section 3A competition Saturday.

The nine include eight Section 3A Sub-Section A medalists and one finalist who will advance because another placewinner is unable to compete.

Those combined efforts resulted in 30 points for Windom and a fifth-place team finish in the tournament. Luverne won Sub-Section A with 65 points, followed by Tracy-Milroy-Balaton with 45, Pipestone Area with 39 and Murray County Central was fourth with 35 points.

Leading the Windom contigent were seniors Parker Alvstad and Allison Letcher. Alvstad copped the sub-section title in creative expression, while Letcher captured gold in original oratory.

As it has been all season, original oratory again was a strong category for Windom. In addition to Letcher’s title, sophomore Makenna McNamara finished second and junior Kaylan Donchez finished third.

Windom also got a silver medal performance from junior Dora Larson in informative speaking, while seventh-grader Alivia Letcher finished fifth.

Sophomore Virginia Jensen and freshman Isaac Armstrong rounded out Windom’s places, finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in creative expression and humorous.

Seventh-grader Tyler Maras was a finalist in extemporaneous reading. However, because another medalist will not be able to compete in Saturday’s section tournament, Maras will replace that individual.
